| Director of Research / Gwaltney Professor of Manufacturing Systems
Leon McGinnis is Director of Research for the Tennenbaum Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he also holds the Gwaltney Chair in Manufacturing Systems and is a professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. McGinnis serves as an Associate Director for the Manufacturing Research Center, founding Director of the Product and Systems Lifecycle Management Center, and founder of the Keck Virtual Factory Lab. Previous responsibilities at Georgia Tech include Program Manager in the Material Handling Research Center, Director of the Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Systems Program, and Chair of the Institute Executive Board.
In his research, Professor McGinnis investigates the problems arising in the description, analysis, and design of discrete event logistics systems, which include, for example, warehouses, factories, and global supply networks. His work always involves the integration of computational tools for description and analysis, and the creation of formal models of system structure and behavior. He has supervised twenty-four PhD graduates, who have gone on to become tenured faculty, school chairs, Deans, and corporate CEOs. He is the author of twenty books or book chapters, seventy refereed archival publications, and hundreds of conference papers and presentations, and a frequent speaker at international conferences.
Professor McGinnis has received the outstanding publication award, the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award, and election to Fellow from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and the Reed-Apple Award from the Material Handling Education Foundation.
